There are some photos from a recent Funk Fiction gig up on the photos page. A little background for the uninitiated: Funk Fiction are a Melbourne band that cover funk and soul classics from the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan. That doesn't really do them justice though. They are a ten-piece band with some of Melbourne's finest session musos and singers, and they always rock out in a big way.
When I was a younger lad we used to go to see them fairly regularly at the Evelyn on Tuesday nights, until they stopped playing something like seven years ago. Listening to this sort of music live contributed a lot to my musical education - we enjoyed it so much we even tried starting our own Funk Fiction-inspired cover band (let's just say it didn't work out). In the years since, I haven't found another band that creates the sort of atmosphere, and has the sort of talent that these guys have. So when I heard they were back at the Evelyn during June, I was there with bells on.
They played four gigs, with nine of the original members and Damon Grant playing sax. They have promised to be back later in the year - keep an eye out for when they're back and check them out!
Glad to see that you've got a blog now Steve- someone as technology literate as you- about time! :)
look forward to reading your updates. can't wait for Funk Fiction to come back! :)
